The Fourth Industrial Revolution
provides opportunities for the emergence of new job types and needs, such as a
sentiment analyst. Sentiment analysis is a new skill set in making an analysis
of the results of public opinion from social media and websites. This challenge
is addressed by
the Department of Information Technology (hereinafter
JTI) of the
State Polytechnic of Jember (POLIJE) through the Expertise and Research Group (hereinafter
GARIS) at the
JTI of POLIJE.
Through online public lectures,
GARIS at the JTI of POLIJE presented the results of the research on sentiment analysis
carried out on Saturday, October 24, 2020 via Zoom. The activity was attended by around 120 lecturers
from various universities in Indonesia, 20 representatives from the business/industry,
and 100 students from various study programs at POLIJE.
The results of the first research
were presented by Wahyu Pebrianto, S. Tr. Kom, an alumnus of the D4 (Diploma
4) Informatics
Engineering program at the JTI of POLIJE. He presented
about the
data scrapping techniques used as input data in the sentiment analysis process
from websites and Twitter. The second speaker was Ery Setiyawan Jullev A., S.
Kom., M. Cs., a lecturer who is a member of GARIS – Big Data, who presented
about what
machine learning is, as well as the use and implementation of machine learning
useful for classifying input data.
In this online public lecture, the
JTI of POLIJE also invited speakers from the industry, such as Netray ID. Netray ID is a company
engaged in sentiment analysis based in Jakarta and it was a partner in
presenting the research results. Moch. Ari Nasichuddin, S. Kom., M. Eng, a
machine learning engineer at Netray ID, explained the journey of sentiment
analysis research to get the results of digital products that are useful for
business decisions of various companies. The presentation of the research
results gave an example of a product that can automatically provide an overview
of the percentage of netizens of a particular topic and show whether the majority
of them show positive or negative attitudes towards the topic. Furthermore, it
can be seen in more detail such as which influencers leading the public opinion on Twitter are
and what topics mostly discussed by social media users are.
The event was moderated by Trismayanti Dwi Puspitasari, S. Kom., M. Cs. lasted for three hours starting from 08.00 WIB. During the session, participants got a complete picture of sentiment analysis research. Starting from data retrieval techniques, data classification using machine learning, to output in the form of analysis that is useful for business decisions. At the end of the event, Surateno, S. Kom., M. Kom, the Deputy Director I for the academic affairs of POLIJE, said, "One of the characteristics of vocational universities is that their research results are applicable in the industry". Furthermore, he also hoped that collaborative activities with parties from the industry like the presentation of research results like this, could become a culture at POLIJE, especially in the JTI to produce a product that is ready to be sold to/enjoyed by the society.
